Gaël Monfils renounced the Masters 1000 in Rome (May 7-18) three weeks from Roland-Garros (May 26-June 9) due to an injury to one foot, the organizers said on Saturday.
New setback for Gaël Monfils, and not in the tennis sense: he gave up the Masters 1000 in Rome (May 7-18) three weeks from Roland-Garros (May 26-June 9). In question: an injury to one foot.
Admittedly, the West Indian was never really comfortable on the clay of Foro Italico. Since his first participation, in 2006, where he had reached the last square, he often skipped the Roman meeting or was eliminated as soon as he entered the scene (2007, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2024).
It must be said that at 38 years old, he therefore has been following physical seeds for a month, it is also an injury to one foot that had forced him to declare for the ATP 500 tournament in Munich (Germany) in which he was originally to participate in mid-April.
As for the Madrid Masters 1000 which ends on Sunday, he won his first round match against Croatian Borna Gojo, but, sick, he had to forfeit the next match.
His season therefore experienced a stop after starting with a blow: he had won the Auckland tournament, the 13th title of his career, his first since 2023. He also reached the 8th finals of the Australian Open, notably by eliminating the American Taylor Fritz, 4th in the world.
The next tournament on its program is that of Hamburg (May 17-24), just before Roland-Garros.
