More than 500 people demonstrated late Thursday in Lausanne on International Workers’ Day. Under the motto “Solidarity rather than hatred”, the Union Union Vaudoise claimed the introduction of a cantonal minimum wage and denounced the tax cuts.
The demonstrators gathered around 5:00 p.m. in place of the castle, where several trade unionists spoke in front of the crowd.
The criticisms were particularly strong against the counter-project of the State Council on the minimum wage, designated of “empty shell” and “skin of sorrow”.
“The majority of the right to the Council of State empty of its meaning the minimum wage,” said Unia Vaud Bounouar Benmenni. The latter has pointed out the expected exceptions and potential delays, which, according to him, will prevent many workers from benefiting from this minimum wage.
“This strategy is a shame, especially when you hear all the efforts of the Council of State to offer tax gifts to the richest in this canton,” he continued. “We want a minimum wage, not minimalist.”
Resistance against “12%initiative”
The trade unionists also called upon to refuse the initiative for a reduction in taxes. “12% less, it is 12% less for the service to the population. And it is the most precarious who will drink,” said a speaker.
The demonstrators recalled their solidarity in the face of the rise of the extreme right. They denounced the attacks on women’s rights, the decline in gender equality and the spread of a hate discourse against foreigners.
The procession then started with approximately an hour late towards the Montbenon casino. On the signs and banners, we could read “Cut our budgets, we will cut your heads”, “Barrons the road to the far right” or “Study, work, unity in the face of austerity”.
Several groups were present in the procession. Some Palestinian and Keffiehs flags were visible as a sign of solidarity with the Gazaoui people, while Kurdish activists closed walking.
For this day of labor festival in the canton, activities were also organized in Yverdon-les-Bains. In total, around fifty demonstrations took place throughout Switzerland.
