The Market Regulatory Agency (ARM) announced the suspension of onion sales between production areas and wholesale markets from Monday, April 14 at midnight. This decision, relayed by our colleagues from the South Daily, was communicated by Aly Ndiaye, communications officer of the National Oignon (IPOS).
According to Aly Ndiaye, the suspension was motivated by a surplus of onions on the national market, which led to a significant drop in prices and weakened the traders. During a press briefing, he detailed a circular letter from ARM dating from April 11, 2025, which underlines a saturation of the market caused by harvest peaks during the months of March and April.
To remedy this situation and protect producers while supporting local production, ARM has decided to temporarily suspend, from April 14 at midnight, onion transactions between production areas and wholesale markets across the country. Aly Ndiaye clarified that until April 22, no sales authorization will be issued, thus making it possible to assess the impact of this measure.
As reported by the South Daily site, a new meeting is planned to determine future actions according to the results observed during this period of suspension.
