Senegal strengthens its regulatory arsenal to guarantee the security of its domestic market in terms of telecommunications. The director general of the telecommunications and postal regulatory authority (ARTP), Mr. Dahirou Thiam, chaired this Thursday, April 10, 2025 in Dakar the official launch of the work of the work of Committee for the fight against the introduction of non -approved and/or counterfeit radioelectric equipment.
Made up of key players in regulation, security and standardization, this committee notably brings together artp, General Directorate of Customsthe Police nationalel’Senegalese agency for industrial property and technological innovation (ASPIT)as well as theSenegalese normalization association (ASN).
A safety and quality issue of services
The main objective of this committee is clear: Fighting the entry, marketing and use of non -approved radioelectric equipment on the national market. This equipment, often counterfeit or not in accordance with the standards in force, constitute a danger both for the quality of telecommunications services and for the safety of users.
Indeed, their proliferation threatens the stability of networks, interferes with the radio frequencies allocated to operators and jeopardizes the protection of personal data. “This initiative aims to establish a rigorous monitoring and control framework, to guarantee Senegalese citizens of reliable and secure telecommunications,” said Mr. Thiam.
Reinforced interinstitutional collaboration
The creation of this committee reflects the will of the Senegalese authorities to adopt a Collaborative and multisectoral approach Faced with a complex technological challenge. By associating customs control services, security forces, standardization bodies and innovation players, the system is part of a logic of Operational synergy.
This mechanism should also contribute to clean up the marketby fighting against unfair competition exercised by importers of unauthorized equipment, and thus protect operators respecting the standards in force.
For the authorities, it is also a question of sending a strong message to consumers: compliance with standards is not a luxury, but a necessity. The establishment of this committee is part of a broader framework of modernization of the national digital ecosystem and the protection of users against the deleterious effects of the informal economy in the technological sector.
With this new committee, ArtP reaffirms its role as guarantor of the technical, economic and security regulation of telecommunications in Senegal. One more advance towards a safer, more transparent, and better structured digital market.
