On April 13 and 14, 2025, Thiès welcomed an essential workshop aimed at strengthening the skills of women in the field of craft fishing. This event, organized under the aegis of the ADEPA, aimed to develop the personal and political skills of the participants from the Women’s Women’s Women’s Fisheries Network in Senegal (Refepas) and the National Union of Mareyeurs du Senegal (UNAMS). This training session is part of a global project entitled “World Tool Box for Participatory Fisheries Governance”.
This ambitious project, which has its origin in a collaboration with the environmental justice foundation (EFJ), aims to equip these women with the tools necessary to better understand their work environment and position themselves in advocacy. “Women play a crucial role in the fishing sector in Senegal. However, their efforts are sometimes lacking in visibility, “said Moussa Mbengue, executive secretary of ADEPA, as our colleagues from South Daily reported. This declaration highlights the importance of providing women with personal development skills to strengthen their self -esteem and identify their potential latent.
The session was also a springboard for the participants in order to acquire communication tools and vital skills to carry out plea campaigns with state bodies and partners. The representative of the Directorate General of Maritime Fisheries, Mrs. Amy Guèye, stressed the importance of this initiative: “This training not only helps women to better assert themselves in their personal life, but it is also essential for the rigorous respect for peaches regulations. She highlighted the current awareness efforts to eliminate fishing and the transformation of juveniles.
At the end of these two intense days, the participants found themselves better armed to influence the governance of peaches, supported by leaders of refepas and unams. A final report will be drawn up and presented to the competent authorities, thus marking a significant advance in the involvement of women in this key sector, according to the article published by Sud Quotidien.
