The draw of the African U20 African Cup of Nations was completely redone after a major change: Côte d’Ivoire, initially designated host countries, withdrew from the organization. A decision that upsets the dynamics of the tournament, but which has also highlighted notable adjustments in the rules of participation.
Why a new draw?
Côte d’Ivoire, which had not qualified sportingly for the final phase, was initially to take part in competition as a host country, bringing the number of teams to 13. With its withdrawal, Egypt was designated as a new organizing country. However, the young Pharaohs were already qualified, which could have brought the number of teams to 12.
But CAF wanted to maintain the format at 13 teams. For this, she offered an additional place to the UNAF zone, which now hosts the tournament. It is Tunisia, 3rd in this area, which was drafted and joined the final draw. A decision that questions: new rule or exceptional adaptation? In any case, this edition marks a turning point, since the format at 12 teams adopted in 2021 already seems to evolve …
