The Senegalese Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs has confirmed the death of a Senegalese citizen in São Paulo. An investigation was opened to determine the circumstances of the drama which would have involved a violent police intervention.
The Senegalese Minister for African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Yassine Fall, published a message of condolences following the death of a Senegalese national in Brazil.

«In this painful circumstance, I would like to express, on behalf of the Government of Senegal, my condolences moved to the family of the deceased, to the Senegalese community residing in Brazil, as well as all of our compatriots in the diaspora“Said the minister in her message.
The press release also specifies that “The steps are taken, via our diplomatic representation to shed light on the circumstances of this dramaSuggesting that an investigation is underway to determine the exact causes of the death.
Alleged police violence and demonstrations
-The circumstances of the death, not detailed in the official Senegalese press release, would be linked to a police intervention according to local information. Ngagne Mbaye was allegedly killed by a police officer during an operation to confiscate goods aimed at street vendors in the Brás district in São Paulo.
According to witnesses cited by Brazilian media, the victim tried to defend an elderly colleague when an altercation broke out with the police. He would have been first struck with a stick by a policeman before replying with an iron bar, which would have led to the use of a firearm by the police officer.
A demonstration organized on Saturday April 12 to protest against this death degenerated, the military police having used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
The Center for Human Rights and Citizenship of Immigrants denounced in a press release what he considers as a new manifestation of police violence targeting specifically “A black, migrant and worker man“, And demands a transparent investigation as well as sanctions.
Brazilian authorities have announced that the police officer involved was noted from his duties and that his weapon was seized as part of the current investigation.
