Cradle of female resistance in Senegal, the locality of Nder is about to welcome an exceptional school. According to Colonel Abdoulaye Mbengue, commander of the Military Prytaneous of Saint-Louis, a new era is announced in Senegalese military education with the imminent opening of a military prytaneous entirely dedicated to young girls, from sixth to the final year.
This initiative marks a major advance in the national educational and military landscape. The future establishment, which will be located in Nder, will carry a strong symbolic load. Indeed, this village is a high place of memory where, in the 17th century, women chose collective immolation to escape slavery, an act which has become a powerful symbol of resistance, dignity and female courage.
Colonel Mbengue clarified that the first promotion of this Prytaneum was initially welcomed from the 2024-2025 school year. However, for not specified reasons, the opening has been postponed, although it is qualified as “imminent”. He stressed that he is unable to announce an exact date for the moment.
Nder, a strong symbol of memory and resistance
-The choice of NDER to set up this establishment is therefore no coincidence. It is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of women in this historical locality, at the same time as a desire to anchor military values in a site responsible for memory.
This initiative represents a notable evolution compared to the Military Prytaneous of Saint-Louis (PMS), which is preparing to celebrate its 103rd year of existence. Institution renowned for its rigor and excellence, the PMS has always been reserved for boys admitted by extremely selective competition. According to Colonel Mbengue, many former students remain attached to the preservation of this specificity.
The opening of the military prytaneous for girls in Nder will thus enrich the offer of military training in Senegal, while offering young girls a demanding education based on discipline, academic excellence and patriotic values.
