French rugby is about to welcome a new renowned coach. Gareth Baber, former Fiji coach, agreed to take the reins of the Nice stadium, current last of Pro D2, for next season.
An impressive course
Aged 52, Gareth Baber is best known for having led the Rugby team to 7 from Fiji to victory at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. His success was followed by a visit to the Edinburgh club, where he used his expertise in attack and development of the technical skills of the players. Before that, Baber had also collaborated with the University of Cardiff and the Fijian Federation as a consultant.

To support her in his mission in Nice, Baber will be able to count on a technical staff made up of Barry Maddocks and Emiliano Bergamaschi. Maddocks, former coach in Biarritz, will be responsible for the attack and three-quarters, while Bergamaschi, currently in the supervision of Parma Zebre, will take care of the forwards. Jamie Cudmore, already present in the staff, will continue to provide support.
-Promising reinforcements
The Nice stadium does not intend to stop at the arrival of Gareth Baber and his team. Several recruits of choice are expected to strengthen the workforce. Among them, the rear international Rochelais Brice Dulin, the Fijien Waisea Nayacalevu center, and the Welsh opener Owen Williams. Bayonnais players Guillaume Rouet and Uzair Cassiem are also about to join the Riviera club.
A challenge
The challenge that awaits Gareth Baber and his team is large, while the Nice stadium is at the bottom of the Pro D2 ranking. Next season, the club will evolve in national, and the goal will be to quickly find the high level. The appointment of Baber, with his experience and vision of the game, could well be the turning point that the Nice stadium needs to straighten the bar.
