The Montpellier club has just created a female section that is already training and will start in the league from September.
For the first time since its creation in 2020, the Montpellier stadium welcomed players at the club. Since March and under the leadership of leaders wishing to see a female section born, Julien Cacciapaglia has led training on the Gaëlle-Mignot field at the Grammont estate. “We started the adventure on this end of the season, just to play rugby for two or three months, explains the one who has just arrived in Montpellier from northern France. The idea is to start in the league from September. At the start, a group of five or six girls wanted to try, then others joined the team thanks to communication by Flyers and on social networks. We have students, some of the law faculty who already plays rugby at 7 with the University of Montpellier. We have chosen to practice XV rugby, it is interesting since the discipline can accommodate all types of profile. “
80 % beginners
For the moment, 80 % of the workforce is a beginner. Then Julien Cacciapaglia strives to mix pleasure in learning fundamental rules: “We see the 21 rules of rugby: the scrum, the offside, the referee’s gestures … But also the values of rugby, the discipline. We train twice a week and we will go to three sessions next season”he explains.
Manon, law student, joined the Montpellier stadium with several of her friends: “We are already playing rugby in VII with college. We want to play in club, it’s more intense, there will be more games. Everything is going well, it’s cool. There is a friendly mind. It makes you want to continue, I hope that at the start of the school year, we will be much more.”
The call is launched, the club recruits players from all levels to start a new chapter of women’s rugby in Montpellier.
