The Sprint race of the Miami Grand Prix was held this Saturday before the qualifications. This GP will be the sixth of the 24 of this 2025 Formula 1 season. This Friday, Oscar Piastri had scored the best time of the only free test session in his McLaren before the young prodigy from Mercedes, Kimi Antonelli, achieved a feat by winning the pole for the sprint.

Course sprint

The start of the Sprint race was delayed because of the rain after the training round. During this one, Charles Leclerc hit a wall. The Monegasque from Ferrari had to abandon before departure. When the Sprint race was really able to start, the 20 pilots first carried out two laps of the track behind the safety car before making a stopped departure. When it was done, the pilots were already two curved rounds out of 18.

At the first turn, Kimi Antonelli was released too wide and Oscar Piastri, who had taken a good flight, shunned him first place. The Italian from Mercedes found himself in fourth position and complained of having been pushed out of the track. In mid-race, Oscar Piastri had two and a half seconds in advance on his teammate Lando Norris, while the track was hung. Two laps later, the DRS was activated and Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull) was the first to return to the wells to put dry tires.

In front, Lando Norris was getting closer and more closer to Oscar Piastri. In the thirteenth round, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli also went to the wells. Red Bull released Verstappen without paying attention to the arrival of Antonelli. The Dutchman then struck the Mercedes and he broke part of his front fin. Because of this, Kimi Antonelli failed to stop at his location.

As for Carlos Sainz, he suffered from a puncture at his left rear tire after taking the wall of the chicane at the turn 14. This forced him to abandon. In the 14th round, Oscar Piastri, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli returned to the wells. Lando Norris was leading the Sprint race and his teammate came out second in front of Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Shortly after, Lewis Hamilton managed to take third place in Max Verstappen.

Four laps from the finish, Lando Norris changed his gums. At the same time, Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) touched the back of the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso and sent the Spaniard in the wall of the turn 12. Alonso was completely destroyed and he had to give up. A security car was therefore deployed until the end of the Sprint race.

Partly thanks to this, Lando Norris emerged from wells in first position in front of his teammate. Max Verstappen was receiving a 10 -second penalty for the incident with Kimi Antonelli.

With a checkered flag, Lando Norris won ahead of Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen crossed the fourth line, but ranked last because of his penalty. This means that the Red Bull driver has finished a race outside the points for the first time since 2016.

Alexander Albon was then supposed to inherit fourth place. However, the Williams driver did not comply with the time deltas imposed under the safety car because it was too slow. He therefore received five seconds of penalty after the race and spent 11th. As a result, George Russell ranked fourth ahead of Lance Stroll, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman (Haas).

However, Lawson and Bearman also received 5 seconds of penalty after the race. Liam Lawson received his for causing the accident of Fernando Alonso and Oliver Bearman took his 5 seconds because he was released dangerously in the well.

Following all these penalties, Yuki Tsunoda found himself sixth just behind Lance Stroll. The Japanese was therefore ahead of Kimi Antonelli. Pierre Gasly (Alpine) inherited the eighth place, the last synonym of points. For the complete and updated ranking, click here.

Qualifications

Unlike the Sprint race, qualifications started on a dry track. The single -seaters of Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc were repaired and the two pilots took part in the first segment. Max Verstappen was the fastest during this one. Oliver Bearman, launches Stroll, Pierre Gasly, Fernando Alonso and Nico Hülkenberg (Sauber) have not aligned a sufficient time to go to the second segment.

During the Q2, no incident was to be noted. Oscar Piastri scored the best time ahead of Lando Norris. As for Liam Lawson, Jack Doohan (Alpine), Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Lewis Hamilton and Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls), they were eliminated.

The third segment was once again very disputed. After the first fast laps, Max Verstappen was in the lead just in front of the two McLaren. After the last passage of each pilot, Max Verstappen managed to keep his first place thanks to a time in 1’26”204 and an excellent first sector. The Dutchman thus signs his 43rd pole position. He will ahead of the Lando Norris and Kimi Antonelli grid. Oscar Piastri will start fourth ahead of George Russell, Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon. Charles Leclerc will start eighth place. Esteban Ocon (Haas) and Yuki Tsunoda will complete the top 10. For the full ranking, click here.
