Driver drives in a group of people in Stuttgart – a dead man

It happens on one of the first warm evenings in downtown Stuttgart: At the central light rail stop at Olgaeck, people are waiting for the next train after the end of the day when a black off-road vehicle suddenly bends around the corner and drives into a crowd.

At least eight people – including children – were injured, three of them according to the fire brigade. A woman was revived on site, but in the evening the 46-year-old succumbed to her serious injuries in the hospital, as the police and public prosecutor said.

The driver of the car, a 42-year-old, was arrested according to the police. During the investigation, it quickly became clear: the fatal journey was not a planned act, but an accident.

“According to the current investigation, there is currently no evidence that suggest a deliberate act of violence or a attack,” says a joint message from the police and the public prosecutor. Stuttgart’s city spokeswoman Susanne Kaufmann later announced that the public prosecutor had confirmed that the tragic event was a traffic accident.

Child was operated on in the hospital

The remains of the material of the rescue workers can be seen in photos of the scene of the accident: plastic gloves, bags, bandages. There was also a folded stroller at the accident site. A total of five children are among the injuries, as the Stuttgart Clinic announced in the evening.

The slightly injured dealt with the emergency services in a kind of bus from the fire brigade, gradually the people were able to leave it and were led away. Fire brigade, rescue workers and police worked in a spacious area and hung the place of the incident with tarpaulins for privacy protection.

At least for the injured children, the all -clear can be given carefully, it said from the hospital. “In the evening, a child was surgically supplied by traumatologists and mouth jaw-facilities and will then be treated intensive medicine,” said clinic spokesman Stefan Möbius. In addition, two adults would be treated in the clinic. “Two of the patients were seriously injured and had to be treated in the shock room.”

The clinic immediately increased its intensive care capacities after the control center was alerted. “Since the emergency room is heavily stressed on Friday evening, additional intensive staff of the house was immediately alerted,” says Jan Steffen Jürgensen, board member of the Stuttgart Clinic.

Investigations into the accident run

The exact background of the incident are still unclear. It is also not known how quickly the car drove into the crowd. Accident specialists looked at the location of the action of a police spokeswoman, witnesses were interrogated.

Mayor Clemens Maier personally got an impression of the accident in the evening. Together with Mayor Frank Nopper, he explained: «We are shaken by this tragic traffic accident, as a result of which a 46-year-old woman has died. Our sincere sympathy applies to your relatives. In my thoughts we are with all injuries and their families and wish them a early recovery. »

Sacrifice came from the railway station

The incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. at the Olgaeck subway stop. The vehicle came to a standstill there on the street, partly on the area where pedestrians otherwise have to wait at the traffic light. The actually stable metal railing behind it is bent.

According to the initial knowledge of the police, the driver turned right from a single-lane side street to the right to the multi-lane federal road leading out of the city and drove to the group of people, which probably came from the Stadtbahn stop.

The stop is located in the middle of the road-the road leads out of the valley kettle out of the city at this point, and several important subway lines drive at the above-ground stop.
