Bottal

BDFIL Starts this Monday, May 5, and its program is so imposing that it can intimidate the least informed. Small selection drawn of a hearty program where there is something for everyone and all colors.

The manga in the spotlight

Cover of the Goldorak Special N.5 magazine with characters from the Goldorak anime on a yellow background.

While The BCU presents “the exhibition that kills”, Consecrated to the Pioneer – and Vaudoise journal – in terms of manga, “the cry that kills”, with its six numbers published between 1978 and 1981, Bdfil takes stock of a genre that has not always had a good press, but which today dominates the comic strip market today. In 2023, some 40 million copies of manga were sold in France … The exhibition “Mangafil: an editorial adventure in Francophonie” returns to the history of this success which, if he was not immediate despite Goldorak and Candy, then turned into a tidal wave. A very beautiful opening on this editorial phenomenon, supplemented by a projection of “Akira”, famous anime of 1988 adapted from the manga of the same name, in the Capitol (VE May 16, 8:30 p.m.).

“Mangafil: an editorial adventure in Francophonie”, Rasude.

Monstrously fantasy

Thorgal comic book cover: two characters in intense combat in the rain, with swords and shields.

Like sometimes conspired by the elites of the ninth art, Fantasy has found a place in Bdfil. Not yet a big exhibition to take stock of a genre that always arouses a monster craze, but already a meeting, in the sign of “monsters, magic and fantasy”, between the author of BD Lausannois Elk (“The songs of chaos”) And the Polish Przemyslaw Truscinski, author but also designer of the video game character “The Witcher”. Note also the presence of Fred Vignaux, designer of the last six “Thorgal”, who will be in dedication on Saturday May 10 (from 3:30 p.m.) and Sunday May 11 (from 2 p.m.).

Death will have these features

Illustration of a skeleton smiling in an open tomb, with flowers on earth, and a hand holding a brush. Text: 'Telling Death - Tell Death'.

Who said comics could not deal with serious, existential subjects? Around the recent publication of Sarah Najjar, “take shape”, in Slatkine, who is interested in the professions that rub shoulders closely, the meeting “sketch death: between art and science” is confronted with this sometimes taboo question: how to speak of the death and the sufferings it leads to? Caregivers to the employees of the funeral directors, the testimonies abound and make it possible to reflect on this purpose without giving in to dramatization.

Dora Formica, Lausanne carte blanche

Two black and white illustrations of 'Human certified' by Dora Formica. The first image shows a person lying on the ground with dynamic lines behind them, holding a phone with the text 'I am ok at the idea of me fuckup a little'. The second image shows the same standing person, surrounded by vegetation, with the text 'and I know that all my values are replaced'.

The BDFIL 2025 Carte 2025 goes to the Lausanne illustrator Dora Formica, which is about to release its first comic book at Helvetiq, “human certified”. The designer, descendant of a beautiful line of artists, explores the future of her job confronted with the rise of artificial intelligence providing images. Party to meet her peers during a European workshop tour, she opens her exhibition to ten other artists and her father. The opportunity to see all these little people at work, live. We also find the same sharing approach on the side of the exhibition “Writing is a trade”, offered at Rasude by Loo Hui Phang, winner of the René Goscinny 2021 prize, who also invited many screenwriters to reveal their manufacturing secrets.

Dora Formica, platform 10 – Arcades is. Two round tables with the artist, “Coding or drawing, the BD in the AI test”, its May 17 (11 a.m.), MCBA auditorium, and “Voyage: Voyage: on the spot or at the workshop”, di 18 (10:30 am), MCBA auditorium.

Children’s quiz

Illustration of a little girl with braids and cat ears, holding a gray cat, surrounded by several cats. She says 'I am 5 years old!'.

In funny activities for the little ones, even the slightly larger, Bdfil may sign a record … of precocity. Because the quiz of the kids makes mediation for and by children, since it is Zoé, barely 5 years old, daughter of the co -director Gaëlle Kovaliv, who animates this game of questions where it will be a question of recognizing some well -known characters – finally, it all depends on the age … – on youth comics.

La Rasude, Espace Enfants, di 11 May (5:30 p.m.).

Petzi superstar

Petzi's boat sails the water, with Petzi and his friends, including a giraffe, on board. Mountains and town in the background.

Among the heroes known of several generations of this edition, there is obviously Petzi, the famous pooh lover of pancakes since 1951. From 2020, the series found a second youth in Francophonie thanks to the designer Thierry Capezzone. The exhibition devoted to BDFIL to him coincides with the release of the last volume, a “petzi in Switzerland” there could be no more circumstances. Some fifty-five years after “Asterix in the Helvetians”, it is therefore Petzi’s turn to have fun with Swiss shots, between the clock and the cheese, without forgetting a whale in Lake Geneva.

Expo “Petzi in Swiss time”, Rasude. Guided tour of May 11 (11 a.m.). A workshop “Draw with Thierry Capezzone”, its May 17 (10:30 am).

Meetings without counting

Woman in a black leather jacket, standing in a street lit at night, with buildings in the background.

Impossible to point out all the aged meetings by bdfil as there are many. From the guest of honor Guillaume Long to Anouk Ricard, the Grand Prix of the Last International Festival of Angoulême, which will be for example gathered in the tautological brand of “humor, it’s funny” (McBa auditorium, its May 10, 11 a.m.), the personalities of the ninth art that make the trip to Lausanne are legion – and we are not even talking about the dedications that have the right to a agenda … Ancients will not miss the appointment with Jean-Pierre Dionnet, veteran of “Metal howling” (Auditorium Photo Élysée-Mudac, di 11 May, 10:30 a.m.). Those who prefer the dialogue between generations will not miss the meeting between the canonized Edmond Baudoin and the muse of a youth committed Blanche Sabbah to the brand of “talking about the world” (underground neighborhood house, its May 10, 4:45 pm).

“Lost sand”, work in progress

Richard Holzer's comic strip entitled 'Sand lost'. A boy has rushed in a room after being called to find a broom. He stumbles into the entrance, causing an amused reaction of the man seated in the office.

It is an understatement to say that Bdfil is interested in young creation. Richard Holzer, laureate of the Stock Exchange at the BD 2024 Creation of the City of Lausanne, has not yet published a comic strip, but the festival is already interested in his first work, in progress. Not yet published, his comic book already has a name, “lost sand”, and evolves in a style which is reminiscent of that of the Franco-Belgian pioneers of the 1920s and 1930s. An unprecedented work, but already exposed in all the stages of creation, from the Ideas of Idea to the Encéé.
