The professor of the Department of Computer Science and Operational Research at the University of Montreal Yoshua Bengio was elected international member of the National Academy of Sciences, one of the most prestigious scientific organizations in the world. This mark of recognition underlines its role in the development of deep learning and its commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) responsible.

Founder of Mila, the Quebec Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Yoshua Bengio thus joins the two other pioneers of deep learning: Yann Lecun and Geoffrey Hinton, elected respectively in 2021 and in 2023. The three researchers received together the A. M. Turing in 2018, considered as the “IT Nobel”, for their major contributions and automatic learning.

This appointment is added to a series of distinctions recently awarded to Professor Bengio. In February, he received the Reine Elizabeth Engineering Prize, alongside six other researchers, for his work in automatic learning. He was also appointed one of the 100 most influential personalities in the world by the magazine Time In 2024, in recognition of his efforts to promote a responsible AI.
