Mayotte: 89 cases of chikungunya now identified in the department – linfo.re

Chikungunya’s epidemic intensified in Mayotte. The number of infections increases rapidly, arousing the concern of the health authorities.

An upsurge in two weeks

According to the latest ARS assessment Mayotte Posted on May 2, 89 people contracted the chikungunya in the 101st department. The figure has almost tripled compared to the 32 cases reported two weeks earlier. Of this total, 28 are of local origin, 28 come from outside, and 33 are still being analyzed. Two patients had to be hospitalized, reports Mayotte La1ère.

Targeted operations to limit propagation

To stem the epidemic, ARS agents intensify actions on the ground. They lead campaigns of destruction of larval lodgings in several municipalities, namely Mamoudzou, Pamandzi, Mtsangamouji, Koungou and Tsingoni. The objective is to reduce mosquito breeding areas in stagnant waters.

A partially suspended vaccination campaign

The vaccination campaign was launched on the island as well as in Reunion, also affected. But three serious incidents were reported, including a death. In response, the authorities decided to withdraw people aged 65 and over the campaign, in the two territories.
