The fratricidal struggle of McLaren pilots which puts Formula 1 in effervescence

In 2024, McLaren had to wait for the Miami Grand Prix of Formula 1 (F1) to win a first victory, the beginnings of a future success for a team that moped at the bottom of the ranking a year earlier. At the end of the season, in December, the British team won the title of world champion of manufacturers, ending two years of domination of Red Bull.

On its momentum, McLaren is back in Florida, Sunday May 4, crowned with a flattering status, and already well installed at the top of the championship (85 points ahead of Mercedes after the Sprint race in Miami, Saturday May 3). His two embedded men, Oscar Piastri (24) and Lando Norris (25), won four of the first five races and are at the top of the pilot ranking, ahead of Max Verstappen (Red Bull).

This start to the season with a fanfare was expected. It is more surprising, on the other hand, than the Australian challenger Piastri is ahead of the British Norris, presented as the favorite to the succession of Verstappen after being the Dauphin of the Dutch in 2024.

Standing into the Alpine Academy by Zach Brown, boss of McLaren, Piastri has only three years of experience in F1 and was so far considered to be the second pilot of the team. But his moult is spectacular: he already displays two pole positions and three victories (China, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia) to his counter in 2025. The Briton, who has been playing in the queen category for seven years, has only succeeded in one pole position and only won a recovery, on March 16, during the Australian Grand Prix, at the opening of the season.
