The Moroccan agricultural workers hired in Huelva formally constituted their union structure, promoted by the collective Jornaleras de Huelva in Lucha (Midding of Huelva in struggle) and the Union of Workers of Andalusia (SOA). Announced on Saturday, this initiative made public in the context of May 1 marks a turning point in contracting between the two countries, to protect the law of workers. In this sense, the organization announced the opening of the first complaint procedure for abusive dismissal, initiated in Morocco by a person under fixed -term contract.
The Spanish media report that this is the first union branch known in Spain and initiated directly by Moroccan seasonal workers, included in the subcontracting system regulated by the GECCO order. This circular migration model articulates the temporary arrival of female labor from Morocco to harvest strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and other known cultures of Huelva.
The profile of these workers meets the criteria established by the Moroccan and Spanish authorities. Women come from rural areas, with family ties to the country of origin, limited training and no knowledge of the language. The model requires a compulsory return at the end of each campaign.
-The training of this section comes only a few days after the announcement of a first organization promoted by the same group, also recorded under the aegis of the SOA. These two initiatives respond to a sustained process of collective empowerment and visibility of agricultural seasonal rights.
The approach also strengthens the role of union action as a real protection tool in favor of a group historically reduced to silence, devoid of access to its representation mechanisms and subject to multiple structural obstacles to report abuses.
This initiative comes after years of repeated public complaints and journalistic surveys documenting unworthy housing conditions, non-payments, violations of collective agreements within the framework of circular workers migration.
