On April 3, Ahmed was found hanged in his cell. He was detained in Béziers. He had less than two months ago before regaining freedom. He had been sentenced to two years in prison. His death surprised everyone. Since then, his family has not understood. She knows nothing. No autopsy report. No elements on the investigation. No one speaks to them. Not the administration, not the prosecution, not the investigators.
His family decided to come together in front of the Nîmes courthouse this Saturday. They want to make their voices heard. Chaib, Ahmed’s brother, was there. “He was my little brother. He grew up with me. He was nice. Today, we’re in total blur. We don’t know what to say.”
Salah, Ahmed’s cousin, is also worried. “It’s very hard. We can’t mourn. The light must be made. The mother could not even come, she no longer has the strength.”
The family lawyer, Maître Saïd Benkhalyl, does not takeoff. He talks about worrying silence. “A month later, still no answer. We will surely file a complaint. For manslaughter. And for non-assistance to a person in danger. And we will also attack the state to engage the responsibility of the prison administration,” he adds.
He deplores a total lack of communication. According to him, this silence prevents the family from mourning. Today, Ahmed’s relatives just want to know, and understand what happened. They don’t want to accuse it wrongly. But they want the truth. They want justice to be done.
