« J“Would like to be pope,” said Donald Trump recently to journalists present at the White House who asked him who he would like to see the next Sovereign Pontiff. “It would be my first choice,” he said.

This Saturday, the American president pushed the joke further by publishing on his social networks a photo of him in papal costume generated by artificial intelligence. A portrait showing him sitting in an armchair, dressed in a white cassock and wearing the pontifical tiara, all adorned with a large cross around his neck. Published on its Instagram, X and Truth Social accounts, the photo was then set out again on the social networks of the White House.

This publication has reacted many Internet users, since it generated more than 25,000 comments on Instagram and nearly 23,000 on Truth Social. Some find this parody photo “hilarious” and “very funny”, while others, among which many Catholics still mourning, expressed their dissatisfaction, deeming it “inappropriate” and “disrespectful” two weeks after the death of Pope Francis.

After his joke, Donald Trump responded to journalists that he did not necessarily have in preference for the next Pope, even if he spoke of one of his favorite candidates, the New York archbishop, Cardinal Timothy Dolan. The start of the conclave to elect a new pope will take place on Wednesday May 7 at the Vatican where 133 cardinals will meet in camera.
