Grafts of cornea and stem cells, cancer surgeries, critical care in neonatalogy; The Maisonneuve-Rosemont (HMR) hospital brings together a panoply of expertise care, although the establishment has been in ruins for years. One thing is certain, all Quebecers could be treated there, so the services offered by tops in their field are unique and sharp. Here’s how this dilapidated hospital stands out:
A revolutionary laser for cornea
The HMR is by far the leader in Quebec for corneal transplant, where 330 surgeries are carried out per year. A brand new “revolutionary” laser has just been bought.
The establishment is also the largest center in Canada for uveitis, an inflammation of the eye. Hyperspecialized services for pigment retinitis and glaucoma are nowhere else.
“We are not just a hospital in eastern Montreal; 60% of visits to external clinics and surgeries are for patients from outside due to areas of expertise, ”underlines the Dr Éric Fortin, medical coordinator in ophthalmology.
Since 2022, specialists have worked in a room rented in Rosemont, since the operating rooms were too dilapidated. The external clinic welcomes more than 80,000 patients each year and there are 10,000 surgeries there.

A leader for emerging babies
This is one of the only three French-speaking establishments in Montreal (with the CUSM and the Jewish General Hospital) that can treat mothers who have serious post-cutting pathologies and their premature newborn.
“When patients arrive from the CHUM Five Stars Hotel […]they are not confident, they think they are arriving in the Third World! Advice Dre Chantal Rivard, head of the gynecology-obstetrics department. But often, they don’t want to be retransferred because our staff is too fantastic. ”
HMR is one of the three hospitals in the province that welcome the most babies in neonatalogy. Sometimes women are installed in rooms with four patients. The air conditioning also often leaves something to be desired during the summer. With 3000 babies born each year, it is more than in the boyfriend.
“If we collapse, Montreal has a problem. The government does not realize how serious it is, ”she deplores.

-Treatment of sarcomas
The multidisciplinary HMR -based sarcoma team has managed the provincial network of musculoskeletal tumors (muscles, bones, soft fabrics) since 2016. The team has been dealing with 1200 consultation requests from all over Quebec (30% are cancers). When patients should be operated on, they are directed in three places, including HMR. Often, these consultations make it possible to avoid unnecessary transfers of patients to Montreal.
“We have surgeons who do only,” emphasizes the Dre Sophie Mottard, orthopedic surgeon at the hospital for 18 years. We are a not just pawn for the local population of Montreal, it is also for Quebec. We have patients everywhere! ”
The hospital offers 18,000 appointments in orthopedics per year.

Stem cell transplants
The hospital will soon reach the impressive figure of the 5000 stem cell transplants, a record in Quebec. This treatment is widely used in the treatment of cancers (lymph nodes, bones, leukemia).
“It is clear that no one else is as many transplants as here, and very, very far. There are patients around Quebec, whose life was saved in HMR, and it was the only hospital that could offer these treatments, “said the Dr Denis-Claude Roy, director of the department of hematology-oncology.
The hospital also specializes in cell therapies (cell injection to fight viruses or tumors). However, the disuse of the Hospital Night at Recruitment.
“When you have a hospital that tears it away, it is not very motivating. It affects our ability to treat patients. The infrastructure must follow, ”he insists.
