Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Friday that the country’s oil production exceeded 135,000 barrels per day (COPD) at the end of March, adding that additional efforts would be deployed to make Turkey a world leader in natural gas exploration.
Speaking at the Summit of Natural Resources in Istanbul, he indicated that this year’s oil production had reached a record, adding that Turkish oil production in 2024 amounted to around 126,000 barrels per day.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan awarded this increase mainly to substantial production in the Gabar region, located in the southern province of şırnak.
Oil was discovered in Gabar in 2021, following drilling operations by Turkish Petroleum Corporation.
To date, more than 26 million barrels of oil have been produced in the region, for total value around 2 billion dollars. The Turkish President also revealed that the country was aimed at growth in the natural gas sector and undertook to make Turkey a global player in exploring natural gas.
According to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the first floating production platform of Turkish natural gas will start its operations next year on the gas field of Sakarya.
“On the Sakarya gas field, we aim for a daily production of approximately 20 million cubic meters in phase 1 and phase 2 by 2026”, he said, fixing a target of 40 million cubic meters per day by 2028.
Discovered in 2020, the Sakarya gas field, located in the Black Sea off the province of Zonguldak, in the north of the country, is one of the most important natural gas discoveries made in Turkey in recent years.
