The medico-educational support system (Lady) of Lisieux (ex -ime), and more specifically the specialized reception unit (UAS), allowed ten young people aged 15 to 20 in a situation of intellectual disability to create a canvas from A to Z.

“I liked to do painting, in addition it was the first time, we are too happy,” reacted Hugo Delestre and Tom Leroy after discovering their work during the opening of Tuesday April 29, 2025, surrounded by their parents, the artist Tamazh and the two supervisors who accompanied them throughout the activity.

“They have become real painters”

At the initiative of this project: Estelle Gatinet, educator instructor.

“I met the artist Tamazh thanks to the municipal bulletin, where it was indicated that she intervened in schools. I said to myself: why not us? In total, we had 11 visits. The first allowed young people to discover her artistic universe, the paintings she painted. »»

Everything then went very quickly in the organization of the sessions.

“We were doing two to three sessions a week. The objective was really that they themselves create their canvas, by choosing the colors, the geometric shapes, the writing … We left them the choice of A to Z. They became real painters ”,

These two supervisors were able to notice the benefits of these outings on the behavior of young people: “Sometimes, here, we can have bickering, but there, when we said that we went to the workshop, they were ready. We saw that they were really waiting for this moment. They were involved and concentrated at each session. We did not recognize them. »»

The artist’s point of view

Tamazh is an artist with an abstract and realistic style, who regularly exhibits in the Pays d’Auge. However, she had never worked with such a numerous group.

“We had to adapt, even at the level of the size of the fabrics. The most important thing was that everyone has a space to paint. »»

From the first meeting, she knew that everything was going to be fine. She has notably been able to rely on her journey as a trainer in a rural family home and in the paramedical sector to live this experience fully:

“It was great. And to see that they were happy, it’s great. The goal was also to show them what they were capable of, despite the handicap. I will see to offer this elsewhere. »»

Teenagers were able to create links with Poppy, the artist’s dog.

“It was the relaxing moment at the end of the session. They cuddled him, kisses, they were still after him. We felt that it allowed them to enjoy and have a lighter moment, especially when the sessions were more agitated. »»
