Friday night’s plans were clear, Ryan García and Devin Haney would win their fighting to face again in October, however, Rolando Romero had another idea and has put that fight between them.
With an intelligent fight, Romero (17-2, 13 kos) defeated Garcia by unanimous decision in the iconic Times Square in New York with qualifications of the judges of 115-112 x2, 118-109.
Romero was a patient, but he quickly warned Garcia when in the second assault he knocked him out after two jabs in his face. Although ‘Kingry’ tried to recover ground, he was insecure and without ideas to counterattack his rival. On a few occasions, Garcia launched blows of power, so he gave the indication he feared for another fall.
“He is a warrior, he got up and finished the fight,” Romero said after the fight.
Garcia never managed to take control of the fight, as other rivals have made in front of ‘Rolly’. Not even in the middle assaults, when he seemed to try a light reaction, Garcia never managed to put romero in trouble because his blows of power did not appear or failed to make their appearance.
It was a return to oblivion for Garcia, who did not fight from the suspension he received after the combat canceled with Devin Haney in April 2024, after failing the anti -doping control. For Romero, on the other hand, this triumph represents a rebirth in a race that seemed stagnant.
“‘Rolly’ made a good fight,” said Garcia. “He grabbed me early. There are no excuses, congratulations to him. He did a great job, and that’s all … I think [ese año de inactividad] It affected my body a lot, both physically and mentally. I am happy to have reached the ring and fought 12 assaults. My respect for ‘Rolly, did a great job.’ ”
On what is coming, Garcia concluded: “We are going to sit, analyze everything and see what follows.”
Teófimo López successfully defended his Super League title of the World Boxing Organization by beating Arnold Barboza Jr., who was undefeated.
The judges’ cards gave López winner with results of 116-112 x2 and 118-110.
Throughout the 12 assaults, López showed superiority in speed, precision and defense, controlling the fight despite receiving a significant blow in the sixth round that left a cut under his eye. With this victory, López improves his record to 22-1 (13 kos), while Barboza suffers his first defeat, being in 32-1 (11 kos).
Devin Haney maintained his undefeated by defeating José Ramírez by unanimous decision, with scores of 118-110 and 119-109 x2.
Despite the clear victory in the cards, the fight did not have much action. Haney opted for an evasive strategy, throwing few blows and avoiding the exchange. Ramírez, meanwhile, showed a dull performance, connecting just 40 of 279 beaten blows.
