Freedom of the press: France loses ground
The Press Freedom Defense NGO notes that the “concentration of private press groups in the hands of a few businessmen becomes a strong concern in the country. “RSF quotes” the expansion of the Bolloré group (CNews, Paris Match, Europe 1, Le Journal du Dimanche, etc.), which absorbed the Lagardère group in 2023, worries the sector because of the brutal and interventionist methods of the shareholder and the lack of internal pluralism, raising fears of the triumph of opinion on the facts. »»
Globally, the RSF 2025 classification of press freedom is dominated by three countries in northern Europe: Norway, Estonia (2nd) and Netherlands (3rd).
In Africa, South Africa (27th), Namibia (28thondial) and Cap-Vert (30th) are the best students on the African continent in matters of press freedom.
In its note to present its 2025 classification, RSF alerts “more insidious economic pressures”, which are also a “major obstacle”. The NGO explains that the economic indicator of the World Press Freedom classification continues to “fall in 2025 and reaches an unprecedented critical level”. Result: for the first time, the situation of press freedom “becomes” difficult “around the world”, warns RSF.
