“In a difficult economic context, marked in particular by high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the advised sale price (PVC) of the PlayStation 5 console in certain European, Middle East and Africa markets (EMEA), as well as in Australia and New Zealand“: This is how Sony is justified on his blog of this new increase in a product stamped PS5, which therefore does not affect the USA, nor Japan or other Asian countries. New European prices are therefore displayed as:
- PS5 Digital Edition : 499,99 euros
- PS5 Standard : 549,99 euros
- PS5 Pro : 799,99 euros
- Disk player: 79.99 euros
Thus, if the PS5 Digital Edition undergoes a price increase of € 50, which occurs after a first increase of € 50 a few years ago. It has therefore taken an additional € 100 since its launch in 2020. More surprising, only € 50 therefore separates the digital version and the standard version (capable of reading the discs, therefore), which remains at € 549.99. And even if Sony drops the price of its external disk player (which goes from € 119.99 to € 79.99), it is always more advantageous to obtain a standard PS5 (€ 549.99), rather than a Digital PS5 embellished with its external disk player (€ 579.98). On the other hand, this is good news for owners of PS5 Pro: they will therefore be able to get the record player for a more advantageous price.
Note that for the time being, these new prices do not yet seem to be taken into account at various resellers. It therefore seems possible to obtain the console at the previous price for some time, before the new prices recommended by Sony are set up for good.
For information, this price increase on the digital version is a first: a console has never increased its price by € 100, more than 4 years after its marketing. In reality, the trend is rather opposite: we recall in particular that in March 2007, Sony launched its PS3 (60 GB) for € 600, before lowering it by € 200 (for a model with more storage, with 80 GB) in just two years of marketing. The most incomprehensible with this increase in the PS5 Digital Edition is above all that it does not target North America, while the euro is experiencing a strong trend compared to the dollar, and that many customs tariffs are still underway under the Trump administration.
