Thunderbolts* | A Marvel that combines action and depression

Imperfect, but endearing characters. A happy dosage of action and humor. A daring scenario. Thunderbolts* Brought us back at the time when a film from Marvel studios was a guarantee of good entertainment.

Entertainment, of course, but which still tackles serious issues. Because the heroes of the feature film by Jake Schreier (Robot & Frankthe series Beef) Do not go well.

Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) suffers from depression. His adoptive father, Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), does not win his years of glory in the Red Guardian costume. The Captain America Famous Famous John Walker family (Wyatt Russell) collapses. Hannah John-Kamen), alias Ghost, and Antonia Dreykov (Olga Kurylenko), alias Taskmaster, no longer count their physical and mental scars.

Always looking for substance that can allow him to flee reality, he participates in an experimental study. It emerges the most powerful being in the world – think of Superman -, but its dark side is also increased tenfold.

Faced with an dismissal procedure, CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) tries to manipulate Bob, renowned-and revamped-Sentry, so that he gets rid of the contractual assassins mentioned above, which connect it to her clandestine activities.

Enraged by the ploy, Sentry will only become darkness and will turn into The Void, creating an abyssal void around him.

Well put together, even better rendered

This is a lot – we have not even mentioned Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), now a member of the American Congress, which is passing on his leather coat in order to lead the Riposte des Thunderbolts -, but it works! The writers Eric Pearson (Thor – Ragnarok, Black Widow) , Janan Calo (The Bear, Beef) manage to summarize the hero’s journey and continue their journey without resorting to long summary dialogues. They use humor and action wisely to reveal everyone’s personalities and establish the issues.

While Jake Schreier continues the frenzied combat scenes in the first half, the tone suddenly changes when his film becomes an exploration of the psyche of his heroes. The exercise is refreshing, but the pace suffers a little. It is however visually very successful, thanks among other things to the immersive photography of Andrew Droz Palermo (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story). The Sound Trame du Trio Son Lux (Everything Everywhere All at Once) contributes in a beautiful way to the experience.

A real signature

Several of the craftsmen of Thunderbolts* have proven themselves in the world of independent cinema or in prestigious television series. The Marvel studios were inspired by the famous A24 studio for the promotional campaign. And it was justified! We are also entitled to performance above average. Florence Pugh (Midsummer, We Live in Time) Authenticity and vulnerability the nuances of Yelena. In this adventure, the heroine is in a way a ray of sunshine covered with clouds and the British actress plays her wonderfully well.

Julia Louis-dreyfus (Seinfeld, Veep) Take advantage of the opportunity to deepen the Valentina Allegra de Fontaine perfide, while Lewis Pullman is very convincing in the skin of the unstable bob. The rest of the distribution does not have the chance to shine as much, but still demonstrates good chemistry.
