The latter, in front of a packed room, did not hide her emotion: “This event has a personal meaning: I was a law student in Nice and I attended the benches of this amphitheater for many years. Say that my grandfather will live in the place fills me with joy. It touches me and honor me.”

A link shared by Catherine Camus. Because the daughter of the native of Constantine, too, frequented “These benches as a law student, fifty years ago. It is a symbolic place for our family.”

An unwavering link with the Mediterranean

Another symbol: the proximity of the Mediterranean, for which the author of Foreigner had an attachment “carnal” et “deep” and that he can now “look”describes his granddaughter.

“For him, she had three senses, Elisabeth Maisondieu-Camus analysis. She served as a sea: swimming, renewal, Renaissance … She also served as a mother, her mother whom he loved so much. She finally served as a woman: he talked about it with incredible sensuality in his works. “

Christian Estrosi also insisted on the passion of Albert Camus for the great blue: “The Mediterranean was philosophically and intellectually so well written and embodied by Albert Camus. All he could tell us, make us meditate, think, is heavy with meaning.” In front of the amphitheater which now bears his name, concludes the mayor, “We will claim that Albert Camus must be overcome or on the contrary that it must be reread and meditate.”

His assistant Agnès Rampal, delegated to the Mediterranean university center and relations with returnees, greeted “ A just man who never is wrong with combat ” and never gets rid of “The refusal of violence and respect for others as presupposed to any form of action.”

The street Anatole-de-Monzie soon tested too?

Until then, the amphitheater bore the name of Anatole de Monzie, support of the Vichy regime and collaboration. “An inappropriate name”recognized Christian Estrosi, seized of the issue at the end of 2023 by a letter from elected officials of opposition.

What about the street which also bears its name in the eastern districts of the city? “It is quite natural that we will think [à la rebaptiser]. He was inappropriate to CUM, he is also inappropriate for Ariane. “
