The President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced on Friday a major advance in the country’s energy sector and its first nuclear power plant.

“By the end of the year, we will start to test production and provide the first electricity of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant,” he said at a natural resources summit in Istanbul.

The Turkish Head of State highlighted the role of Türkiye in global energy security, in particular in the light of the current energy challenges of Europe.

“We have taken many initiatives to contribute to regional energy security in order to mitigate the energy crisis faced by European countries,” said Erdogan.

“The emergence of Türkiye as a refuge during European energy crises is in no way a coincidence,” he added.

The Turkish president also announced the latest stages of the ambitious construction project for the first Türkiye nuclear power plant, which started in 2017.

“The construction of the first reactor of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant must end very soon,” he said.

In addition to advances in the nuclear field, Erdogan also mentioned the efforts made by the country in terms of natural resources research abroad.

“We intend to start the first production this year in one of the gold deposits in Niger for which we have obtained a license,” he said.

Erdogan also underlined the country’s achievements in the energy field: “With operations in Gabar (in the south-east of Türkiye), our daily oil production throughout the Türkiye exceeded 135,000 barrels at the end of March 2025, thus establishing a record”.

He then indicated that the natural gas production objectives in the Sakarya gas field (west of the Black Sea) are 20 million m3 per day in 2026 and 40 million m3 per day in 2028.
